Overview

What to know before you start.

Every acreage eventually has something that needs to come down: a collapsing barn, a leaning shop, an old foundation, or an outbuilding that's outlived its purpose. Get connected with a local Grande Prairie excavation contractor who takes structures down safely, hauls the debris and leaves the site ready to reuse.

Done right, demolition is more controlled than people expect — structures tipped where the crew wants them, metal and lumber separated for recycling, foundations and slabs broken out, and the site graded flat for whatever comes next.

How a controlled demolition goes

A walk-through comes first to identify hazards: asbestos siding or insulation, fuel tanks, hidden wells, septic tanks. Anything questionable gets dealt with before machines move in. From there, salvageable materials are stripped if you want them, then the structure comes down in a controlled direction.

Concrete and foundations are broken up with hydraulic hammers, loaded out, and either hauled to a recycle yard or — for clean concrete — buried on-site as fill where appropriate.

Salvage, recycling and disposal

A surprising amount of an old barn or shop is worth recycling. Metal roofing, structural steel, copper and aluminum all have value. Clean wood can often be reused for fence posts or burned on-site under permit.

What can't be recycled goes to the landfill. Disposal fees are usually billed at cost and shown on the estimate — no markup, no surprises.

Site cleanup and what comes next

Once the structure is down, the contractor backfills foundations, levels the site and brings in topsoil if needed so you can re-seed or build. Many demolition jobs roll straight into a new pad for a replacement shop or building — sequencing both saves mobilization costs.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Is asbestos handled?

Asbestos abatement is done by a licensed abatement company. The excavation contractor will recommend one and resume work once material has been removed.

Can I salvage barn wood first?

Yes. Materials can be stripped for you, or you can do it yourself before anything comes down.

How much does demolition cost in Grande Prairie?

Small outbuildings start around $2,500. Full barns or shops run $5,000–$20,000 depending on size, materials and disposal.

Can an underground oil tank be removed?

Yes, with proper protocols for soil testing and disposal. These jobs are priced individually.
